Shouldn’t I be doing more? and other impossible questions

September 18, 2013 //  by Heather

A new friend of mine from church came over for dinner the other day. She was looking at the homespun art we pin up to the walls: swirls of watercolor, stick figures and drawings.

“I see you teach them about God,” she said approvingly.

I glanced at the wall, surprised, feeling like a fraud. Why would she think that? I wondered. Then I saw it: one of the works—mine—had Praise Ye The Lord lettered in capitals over a wash of pink and blue.

My internal reaction, to feel like I’d deceived her, told me something.

The perfectionism that follows me around like a little nipping dog has its teeth in my parenting, big time.

Especially when it comes to passing down the heritage of faith.

I’m over at SheLoves Magazine today, talking about parenting and faith. Won’t you join me there?

I love that analogy of a nipping dog! Yeah – so true.
That verse in Deuteronomy, makes me think of God wanting ALL of us, every part of us. Not just Sunday. Not just at devotional time. Not just at Bible study. 24/7 all the time. And to be shared with people we care. I see His longing to be included… or rather not excluded. I can imagine Him happy at your household 🙂

Thanks! I see some real fruit from letting go of fear about doing “enough” for my kids’ faith. I’m trusting Jesus more in that area, and I see He’s well able to handle it.
I agree: God does want all of us, but not in a needy way–in a loving, open invitation to step into Love.
